In the beloved film ‘ Notting Hill’, Julia Roberts plays a superstar actress (lol) who has just garnered another academy award, shares with her co-star Hugh Grant:
‘It’s all silly, and none of it is real…’
Perception is what people believe. I truly believe in the “ fake it till you make it” approach. Here is why; during a super special and coveted gig as a platform beauty educator in Toronto and Montreal, I willed myself to get into character and be “like” a Hollywood makeup artist. I AM an LA-based makeup artist! But I’m a real and down to earth person who just being ‘me’ may not have been interesting to this French Canadian audience of beauty professionals. So in order to disarm and be accepted, I put off SUPER confidence as I stepped onto the stage and saw my image projected onto a huge screen. Inside me, I’m thinking “I’m scared”. I honestly wanted to run.
Taking a breath, I remind myself why this audience is seated in this theatre. To hear what I have to say and how I can inspire them with a beauty technique and mindset. So I literally pull all my Wonder Woman vibe together. I tell a joke and ask a question. I go to my favorite comfort spot of teaching the audience to accept a compliment graciously while connecting. I’m standing confident, making eye contact, and I keep smiling.
It might have started off as role-playing. but soon, you find you actually are Wonder Woman. Gear up. Suit up. Head out.
This is called ‘Beauty Power”.
This needs to be done every day of your life.
